NEW
YORK
Census
Reports
1790
– 1810
===========
UPDATED JANUARY 1,
2022
What is
now New York was originally settled by the Dutch in 1621. The area grew slowly
as there were a great many problems with the Indians and with the French along
the northern borders. The area had more than it's
fair share of battles, first with the Indians, then in the French and Indian
War, and then about a third of the battles of the Revolution were fought on New
York soil. New York became the eleventh state and was admitted to the Union in
1788. The first Federal Census of 1790 included New York.
In the
1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of all
ages.
In the
1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25,
26-44, 45 and over.
In the
1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In the
1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed
for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only
families with children 10 and under are listed. In 1900 the month and year of
birth were listed, but they are very inaccurate as they were added later and
most dates are off by at least a year in either direction. In the 1900 through
1920 Census (Soundex), all families are listed.
In the
case of the New England English folks I will use, if possible, the numbering
system Eben Putnam used in his 1908 set of books on
the History of the Putnam Family. By looking up that number in these books, you
can get a somewhat better picture of them.
I am
breaking this census down by County. It will be easier to identify families
that way. Virtually all the folks in Montgomery County are Dutch. The ones in
the other three counties are mostly English; Massachusetts folks that have
headed over from Vermont after the Revolution. The Dutch folks are all Putmans,
the New Englanders are all Putnams, but I am using the spellings that they used
at the time.
Listing
is 1-3-2. He a son of Tarrant Putnam (number 342) and Esther Foster. Abijah was
born in Sutton, Massachusetts and is married to a gal who may be Mary
Wellington, just not sure of her name. He will be in Rome, New York with his
brother Clark in 1800. This line is Abijah > Tarrant (342) > Cornelius
(127) > Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John Putnam (1).
Listing
is 1-0-0. He is number 221. He was born in Salem Village September 11, 1724. He
moved with his family to Sutton, Massachusetts and there he married Sarah Park
on September 7, 1743. They remained there until about 1750 or so when they
moved to Southern Vermont and settled in Dumerston,
Windham County. By 1760, they were in Queensbury, New York until after the
Revolution. Sarah died in the 1770s or early 1780s. By around 1780, they moved
to Lansingburgh near Troy New York. He is now a tad
north in Pittstown. He will marry a gal named Rebecca here in Pittstown in the
early 1790s, and then he will die here August 6, 1796. Rebecca will be the administrix of his will in August 1796. His folks were
Isaac Putnam (58) and Anna Fuller of Salem Village. The line is Asaph >
Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 1-3-3. Another son of Asaph and Sarah. He is number 608A. He was first
married to an Abigail in 1766. His current wife (second) is Elizabeth
Livermore. They have just moved here from Dummerston, Vermont. They will be in
Washington County in 1810, and then will head into Wolford Township, Ontario,
Canada about 1813. His sons Joel and Parks will go up there about 1802. The
third son shown here is Asaph who will be in Saratoga County in 1800 and 1810.
Listing
is 1-1-2. Another of Asaph’s sons, he is number 607. He and his brother Park
were both baptized in Sutton on July 7, 1756. They were probably twins. His
wife is Miriam Doty, they were married here (Rensselaer County now) October 2,
1787. They will be heading to Cornwall, Ontario (Upper Canada) soon. He was a
Loyalist, and served in the British army during the Revolution. He received a
land grant there for his services.
Listing
is 2-2-4. He’s Asaph Junior number 605. He was baptized in Sutton, Worcester
County Massachusetts on June 18, 1749. He is married to Rhoda Brown from
Dutchess County. He’ll be here in 1800 and 1810. He is the Town Constable since
it was organized in 1788.
Listing
is 2-2-2. He is number 606, another son of Asaph and Sarah Park. He was
baptized in Sutton, Massachusetts August 16, 1752. His wife is named Rhoda, but
I don’t have a last name. They will be in Cayuga County in 1800.
Listing
is 1-0-5. The last of Asaph’s sons. Parks or Park was baptized July 7, 1756 in
Sutton. He married Sarah Chapman about 1778. He’ll be in Saratoga County in
1800; not a move just a new County formed out of this portion of Albany County.
Later he will move to Warren County New York.
Listing
is 1-2-2. He is number 549, a son of Stephen Putnam and Mary Gibbs of Sutton,
Massachusetts. He was born there April 17, 1763. He married Doanda
Risley in 1784 just before venturing out here to
Saratoga Springs in about 1788. He’ll die here in 1812. He started off with a
sawmill here, and then decided to take advantage of the springs in the area
that were gathering fame. He built a 70 room hotel
near Congress Spring, aptly named Putnam’s Tavern & Boarding House. By 1800
he was expanding and doing all sorts of ventures. None of the original
buildings are still there, but today there is the Gideon Putnam Hotel in what
is now Saratoga Springs, and named in his honor. His line is Gideon >
Stephen > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 2-1-3. Just as I finished saying that the other Counties had mostly English
folks, here comes the first guy and he is Dutch. He is Aaron Johannes Putman
born here in Schenectady June 13, 1745. Even though this is the first census,
these Putmans have been here well over a Century now. Aaron married Elizabeth
De Spitzer here February 21, 1772. Elizabeth will die in 1796, and Aaron will
marry Catalina Van Schaick in about 1801. He will be
here until he dies in 1830. His folks were Johannes Putman and Elizabeth Six.
The line goes Aaron > Johannes > Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 0-0-3. She lives very near Tunis Putman of the Dutch family. She is
someone’s widow, but I can’t pin her down. She is probably his son Johannes’
widow. Cornelia was a very common Dutch name.
He was
indexed as Portman, but is one of the Dutch Putmans. He is listed 1-1-2. He is
a son of Teunis Putman listed next. He was born May
15, 1755 and will die here July 20, 1824. He married Maritje
(Maria) Van Vorst.
Listing
is 2-0-1. Teunis was born in Niskayuna, Albany County
in March 1716. He married Rebeccah Van Antwerp in
Schenectady October 20, 1750. He is a son of Cornelius Janse Putman and Jacomyntje Viele of Schenectady.
The line is Teunis > Cornelius > Jan.
Listing
is 1-2-4. He is number 796, a son of Nathaniel Putnam (289) and Abigail Wilkins
of Salem Village, Massachusetts and then of Wilton, New Hampshire. He was born
in Salem Village on October 24, 1748. He enlisted in the Colonial Army April
23, 1775 and was at the Battle of Bunker Hill. After the Revolution, about
1780, he left Wilton and came here to New York. His wife is Anna Scripture from
Tolland County Connecticut. In 1800 he will be listed in Otsego County. No real
move, just a new County formed where he lives. The line is Francis (796) >
Nathaniel (289) > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam.
Listing
is 1-0-0. He may be number 804 and a brother of the above Francis. If so, he
was born in Wilton on March 9, 1862, and never married. But, Matt Putnam found
a record in Wilton of an estate sale in 1783 for Benjamin. The name actually
looks like Pittman. Not sure on this one.
Listing
is 1-2-2. He’s just outside Rensselaer. He is Johannes or John Putman son of Lowys (Lewis) Putman
and Sarah Van Antwerp of Niskayuna, Albany County which is only a couple of
miles away. He was born in Niskayuna January 7, 1756 and will die November 25,
1811. He married Elizabeth Vedder of Schenectady. His
line is John > Lowys > Cornelius > Jan.
Listing
is 1-2-1. He is actually a Pulman or Pullman. He is a
son of Nathaniel Pulman and Susannah Salter of
Boston. He was in Greenwich, Rhode Island. He will be here until he dies in
1828. In 1820, a couple of his kids or kin are again mistakenly listed as
Putmans, but are Pulman in all other years. Just
listing him here as I had no idea who he was until Matt Putnam dug up a bunch
of interesting stuff on him.
Listing
is 3-1-3. Dutch folks, he would be a son of Teunis
and Rebecca in Schenectady, and his name should be spelled that-a-way too.
Neither are around in 1800.
Listing
is 1-0-0. Crown Point is by Fort Ticonderoga on the Vermont border. In 1800,
Clark is in Oneida County with a family and an older woman who must be Mom. He
should be a son of Tarrant Putnam number 342 and Esther Foster of Sutton,
Massachusetts, and then Addison County Vermont. This based on several facts.
His son was named Clark Tarrant, and once he settled in Erie County
Pennsylvania he lived near John Putnam who was a son of Abijah Putnam. Abijah
and Clark are brothers. In 1800, there are Clark, Caleb and Abijah all
alongside each other with young families of their own. He is there in 1810, and
in 1820 is in North East Township of Erie County Pennsylvania where he will
remain for the rest of his life. He was married twice I believe. His second
wife was Mary Allen. I do not know the first wife. He's single now at any rate.
Listing
is 1-2-3. He should be Peter Putnam number 1080, who will be in Onondaga County
by 1800, and in Genesee County by 1810. Peter was in New York State early on.
He is a cousin of Clark, and came from Sutton Mass. as well.
Listing
is 1-1-5. Best guess is he is a son of Johannes Victor Putman and Sarah Van
Eppes. He was born in Schenectady in 1747 and will die here in Montgomery
County March 10, 1828. He married Hannah Van Antwerp. His line is David >
Johannes > Victor > Jan.
Listing
is 1-1-1. He is Arent or Aaron L. Putman, a son of Lowys
or Lewis Putman and Sarah Van Antwerp. He was born in 1751 (christened July 10,
1751 in Niskayuna, Albany County. He will die here in Caughnawaga August 1,
1830. He married Rebecca De Garmo February 28, 1772
in Schenectady. His line is Aaron > Lewis > Cornelius > Jan.
Listing
is 1-1-3. David was born in Fort Hunter, Albany County in about 1760. He
married Rebecca Davis in Massachusetts. His line is David > Johannes >
Cornelius > Jan. He will die while digging a well in about 1792 (will
administered March 20, 1793). Rebecca and the kids will be in Lee, Berkshire
County Mass. in the 1800 and 1810 census reports.
Listing
is 2-4-4. He is David Arent Putman, jr. born February 25, 1751. Just a note
here folks. The Dutch guys generally have their father’s first name as their
own middle name. David’s line therefore is David > David > Arent > Jan
or Johannes. Anyway, he married Catrina (Catherine) Ledder
or Lehrin July 24, 1774 here in Caughnawaga. He’ll be
off to Herkimer County in several years and die there in 1824.
Listing
is 2-4-3. He was called Richard. He is a son of Lodowyck Arent and Elizabeth Suitz (Suitzen). He was born in
Johnstown in 1744. He married Neeltje (Nelly) Van Brocklin in Stone Arabia, Albany County October 17, 1767.
He will be here until 1833 when he will die in Johnstown, Fulton County. His
line is Derrick > Lodowyck > Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 1-1-4. Francis or Franz Cornelius was born May 4, 1752 in Mohawk, Albany
County. He is a son of Cornelius Victor Putman and Maria Fonda in Caughnawaga
on December 28, 1777. He will die here in Tribes Hill in 1834. His line is
Francis > Cornelius > Victor > Jan. Or he could be a son of Johannes
Victor Putman and Annatje Van Antwerp. This Francis
was born here in Tribes Hill in about 1750. He married Anna Dence
or Dens on May 2, 1775. His line is Francis (Frans) > Johannes > Victor
> Jan. Good luck, he’s one or the other.
He is
not listed in the index, but should be here never the less. He is a son of
Cornelis Victor Putman, and was born here in 1761 (christened April 19, 1761).
He will die in Caughnawaga April 19, 1798.
Listing
is 3-3-2. He is a son of Johannes Putman and Annette Pruyn.
He was born in 1750 (christened March 3, 1750). I have no idea as to who his
wife is. This line is Jacob > Johannes > Cornelius > Jan.
Listing
is 1-5-2. He is listed as Jacob Jr., but is simply Jacob J. He lives next door
to the Jacobus listed next. But I don’t think he is his son. His name is Jacob
J. (for Johannes, not for Junior). He is a son of Johannes Victor Putman and Annatje (Annette) Van Antwerp. He was born here in 1756,
and will die here June 1, 1817. He married Elizabeth McCarthy in Caughnawaga on
May 27, 1777. This line is Jacob > Johannes > Victor > Jan.
Listing
is 2-2-4. He is a son of Arent Victor Putman. He was born about 1745
(christened January 19, 1746) in Schenectady. He married Sarah Osterhoudt. This line is Jacobus > Arent > Victor
>Jan.
Listing
is 1-2-3. He is Johannes Lodowyck, son of Lodowyck Arent Putman and Elizabeth
Suits. His wife was named Lucy. He will die in Johnstown on November 25, 1811.
His line is Johannes > Lodowyck > Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 2-0-7. He is probably John Arent Putman and his wife Magdalena Visscher. Too
many kids, so most are siblings and his mother, Elizabeth. He is a son of Arent
V. Putman And Elizabeth Peek. The line is John A. > Arent V. > Victor J.
> Johannes Putman.
Listing
is 1-2-4. Here’s a problem. According to Warren Putman’s work I still have two
more Victors to go, but only this one listing. I am going to give you folks
BOTH of these Victors and maybe by 1800 or so we can figure out who is who. The
first Victor is a son of Arent V. Putman and Elizabeth Peek of Tribes Hill. He
was born in 1746 and will die October 12, 1800. He married Maria Ann Schultz.
This line is Victor > Arent V. > Victor J. > Jan. The other Victor is
Victor Cornelius, a son of Cornelius Victor Putman and Elizabeth Pruyn of Caughnawaga. He was born May 31, 1756 in Glen, New
York and died in Glen November 9, 1816. He married Annatje
Garrison, and after she dies in 1813, will marry Margaret Vissher.
This line is Victor > Cornelius > Victor > Jan. Good luck. Actually
you probably should toss the next Victor into the pot, as I am not positive
about him either. All three guys are here, but only two listed. The third may
well still be living at home next Victor into the pot, as I am not positive
about him either. All three guys are here, but only two listed. The third may
well still be living at home.
Listing
is 2-1-4. He is Aaron Johannes, a son of Johannes Putman and Gertrude Six. He
was born June 13, 1745 in Schenectady and will die August 1, 1830. He married
Elizabeth De Spitzer February 21, 1772. She will die in 1796, and in 1801 he
will marry Catalina Van Schaick. The two sons are Ernestus and Johannes. His line is Aaron > Johannes >
Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 1-3-4. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Annatje
(Annie) Newkirk of Schenectady. He was born in about 1748. He married Catherine
Meyers in about 1777. They live in the town of Glen. Several of his brothers
live nearby, his dad is in Caughnawaga Township. His line is Adam > Jacob
> Victor > Jan.
Listing
is 2-0-2. Cornelius Victor is a son of Victor Janse Putman and Grietje Mabie of Schenectady. He
was born December 17, 1724 in Albany. He will die here in Montgomery County on
April 19, 1798. He married Elizabeth Pruyn in 1748.
She will not die until March 21, 1812 here in Auriesville, NY. His line is
Cornelius > Victor > Jan.
Listing
is 2-3-3. Frederick is a son of Lodowyk Arentse and Elizabeth Suitz. He
was born about 1750 in Johnstown and married Catherine Pennell in Stone Arabia
on August 20, 1770. He’ll be around here for a while yet. The line is Frederick
> Lodowyck A. > Arent J. > Johannes Putman.
Listing
is 2-1-4. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Annie Newkirk of Fort Hunter, New
York. He was born there in January 1751. He will die here in Montgomery County
April 13, 1826. He married Rebecca Garrison about 1780.
Listing
is 1-2-2. He is a son of Johannes Putman and Gertrude Six. He was born in about
1752, and was christened in New York City. He married Hannah Anguish here. They
will be here a few more years and then move to Bertie Falls, Welland County Ontario, Canada where he will die in 1837.
Listing
is 1-2-3. Best guess is that he is Ludwig Putman, son of David Arent Putman and
Elizabeth Lehrn. He was born in Fultonville, Albany
County December 10, 1752. He married Maritje (Mary) Grietje Hallenbeck. Warren
doesn’t have him well documented though. His line would be Ludwig > David
> Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 2-2-3. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Annatje
(Annie) Newkirk. He was born August 8, 1754 in Tribes Hill, Montgomery County
and will die here April 13, 1837. He married Margaret Putman. She was a
daughter of Johannes Victor Putman and Annatje Van
Antwerp also of Tribes Hill. This line is Victor > Jacob > Victor
>Jan.
Listing
is 1-4-1. Victor David Putman was born May 22, 1747 in Stone Arabia, Albany
County and will die here in Tribes Hill, Montgomery County October 12, 1800. He
married Maritje (Maria) Schell November 9, 1773. He
is a son of David Arent Putnam and Elizabeth Lehrin.
His line is Victor D. > David A. > Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 1-1-5. He will be listed in Otsego County in 1800. Not that he moved, just
the County was formed in 1791 from Montgomery County. There are several
listings in the IGI that he was born in the 1752-1755 time frame and that he
married Mary (Polly) Ferguson in about 1777 in Otsego. George is a son of David
Arent and Elizabeth Putman. Dutch family. His ‘Dutch’ name is Jurry, which he used on occasion.
Listing
is 2-3-7. Massachusetts guy here. He is number 385, and is a son of Eleazer
Putnam (156) and Hannah Williams of Preston, Connecticut. He was born there
October 13, 1737 and will die in Paris, New York. He married Martha Rose of
Norwich, Conn. May 27, 1762 and they came here to New York about 1765. He and
his son Frederick will be in Oneida County in 1800. They didn’t move, it was
just that Oneida was formed in 1798 out of this part of Montgomery County. This
line is Charles > Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John.
Once
again I will list by County and then alphabetically by first name. Also I will
spell the last name the way it appears in the Census. In the 1800 census both
males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
Listing
is 21010 11010. He is number 550 in
Eben’s books. He is a son of Stephen Putnam (208) and Mary Gibbs of Sutton,
Massachusetts. He was born in Sutton on May 13, 1765 and will die here in
Albany in 1854. He married Hester Johnson in Lansingburgh,
N.Y. on December 25, 1792. His brothers John, Gideon, David and Lewis are all
here in New York State. This line is Elisha > Stephen > Elisha >
Edward > Thomas > John. Elisha was a carpenter and engineer. He built the
first nail mill in Troy, N.Y., built several churches and built a few sections
of the Erie Canal as well.
Listing
is 00010 00101. He is indexed as Anastus. He is a son of Aaron Johannes Putman. He was born
here October 27, 1776, and will die in Winchester, Indiana on October 20, 1865.
He married Nancy Becker here on April 1, 1797. She will die in 1812 just before
Ernestus headed south into West Virginia. He married
Elizabeth Gray on March 24, 1814 in Shepardstown,
Virginia (remember West Virginia was not formed till just before the Civil
War). Then they will head out to Darke County Ohio by the 1820 census. Anyway,
this is a Dutch line from Ernestus > Aaron
Johannes > Johannes > Arent > Jan.
Listing
is 00101 00101. He was here in 1790 and
will be forever.
Listing
is 00101 01010. Teunis’
son is still here. His wife is Maria Van Vorst. Dutch family. See 1790 for the
line.
Listing
is 00010 00001. Probably Teunis’ son born in 1762 in Schenectady, and married to
Matilda Vedder.
Listing
is 00100 10100. There are a whole bunch
of Davids here in New York that are Dutch folks. This
guy is a New Englander. He is number 553, a son of Stephen Putnam and Mary
Gibbs of Sutton, Massachusetts. He was born either in Sutton or Northampton,
Mass on March 21, 1771. He will remain here in Albany until his death on August
9, 1832. He probably came out here with his brother Elisha (listed in Schenectady)
and then met and married Jeannette Angus of Albany on May 29, 1798. They will
have 13 children, but right now they only have Maria born in 1799. His line is
David (553) > Stephen (208) > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 00100 00100. He is a son of Jacob J.
Putman and Elizabeth McCarthy. Dutch. He was born here August 22, 1778, and
married Catherina Van Vranken. He’ll be here forever.
Listing
is 10010 10100. John and Jonas live
right next to each other. He is Jonas’ son, his wife
is Sabra Preston. In 1820 both John and his wife Sabra Preston, and Rhoda,
widow of the following Jonas, will be in Chautauqua County.
Listing
is 01100 10100. The listing is weird as
neither Jonas or Rhoda are listed in this listing.
There should be a one in the last column on both male and female. He is number
606, a son of Asaph Putnam (221) and Sarah Park of Sutton. Don’t have much on
him. He and Rhoda were in Albany County in 1790.
Listing
is 30010 10010. He is number 1284. He is
a son of Andrew Putnam and Lucy Parks of Sutton, Mass. He was born in
Winchester, Mass on March 11, 1769 and died June 14, 1828 here in New York. He
married Azuba Stanhope in Greenfield, Mass on
December 7, 1791. This line is Andrew (1284) > Andrew (525) > Elisha >
Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 10010 20110. Not sure of this guy.
This is probably Asaph junior number 605.
Listing
is 12110 12010. He is number 897. He is
a son of Tarrant Putnam (334) and Mary Porter of Danvers, Massachusetts and
later Newbury, Vermont. Asa was born in Danvers on December 28, 1765. He
married Mary (Polly) Fowler on January 2, 1792 in Corinth, Orange County
Vermont. They came to New York in 1796-97. With two Asas
here, I’m going with this one, as the number and ages of the kids works out
with the 1810 census when he is the only one here. This line is Asa >
Tarrant > Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
Listing
is 20010 10010. He was born in 1773-1775
in Currytown, Montgomery County. He married Elizabeth
Vrooman in the late 1790s. He is a son of Aaron D.
Putman and Delilah Fox from Montgomery County. Aaron was a son of David A.
Putman and Elizabeth Lehrin of Stone Arabia.
Christopher will be in Lyme, Jefferson County in 1820.
Listing
is 00000 00000. He is Francis Jacob
Putman. Again some folks are missing here. He is a son of Jacob Johannes Putman
and Elizabeth McCarthy. He was born here in the county April 30, 1785. He will
marry Hannah Lepper in Caughnawaga January 17, 1807. They will be here in
Amsterdam through the 1850. He will die here February 7, 1857. The line is
Francis J. > Jacob J. > Johannes V. > Victor J. > Johannes Putman.
Listing
is 20010 10010. Lodowyk
and Elizabeth’s son was here in 1790 as well. He was born about 1750 in
Johnstown and married Catherine Pennell in Stone Arabia on August 20, 1770. The
line is Frederick > Lodowyck A. > Arent J. > Johannes Putman.
Listing
is 01110 00010. He should be Johannes Lodowyk and his wife Lucy. They were here in 1790.
Listing
is 00000 00000. Obviously not correct,
got to be some folks here. He is Arent Lewis Putman, and was here in 1790. He
is Arent or Aaron L. Putman, a son of Lowys or Lewis
Putman and Sarah Van Antwerp. He was born in 1751 (christened July 10, 1751 in
Niskayuna, Albany County. He will die here in Caughnawaga August 1, 1830. He
married Rebecca De Garmo February 28, 1772 in
Schenectady. His line is Aaron > Lewis > Cornelius > Jan.
Listing
is 10110 11101. He is Arent Derrick
Putman, son of Derrick Putman and Nelly Van Brocklin.
His wife is Alida Wilson. They will be in Otsego
County in 1810 and 1820 and then off to Michigan by 1822. He will die there in
1837.
